Surprise!

“Chrin?” I blurted in confusion.

The man wore the plain clothes you’d see on a farmer. He clearly wasn’t here on official business in that attire. Beside the guard stood an older version of Amor in the same style of working robes. I didn’t know how many siblings Amor had, but this was certainly one of them. Honestly, trying to keep track of all the families, houses, noble status, and alignments was already overwhelming and I didn’t go to the ball to learn.

Still don’t regret skipping it.

“You never saw me, my lord. We’re going south, private journey. Anything you want sent?” Chrin asked.

I opened and shut my mouth, trying to piece together what happened. I was missing a few pieces of the puzzle and then the clue dawned on me. Amor mentioned his brother in passing. There wasn't much to go on.

“You escaped your exile?” I guessed.

“Amor said you had your wits about you. I’m Fenor,” he said, clasping my forearm. While he looked recently bathed with sturdy clothing and a fresh haircut, rotted teeth told of a harsher life. “Excuse my appearance.”

“I can heal this one,” Suzie said.

“Amor is as close to family as I get among the nobility. I went to battle with him at my side… well, back, but the point stands. Let me see if we can -” I started to say.

Green magic shot into him from the wyvern. The magic swirled around his body, diving into key points, and bursting out in bright flares of energy. He crashed to his knees, head craned back and his mouth agape. Bones popped, teeth corrected, and jolted onto his side. Wet raspy coughs resulted in a pile of black goop pooling beside him.

As violent as the process was, it waned in energy and the magic gave him a reprieve. He gasped, heaving out breaths. Every few gulps of air resulted in more vomiting until the process reached a finality.

“They broke him, and he was slowly dying from a rotting poison. Not anymore,” Suzie said.

I kneeled, picking him up with Chrin. “Thank… thank you, mighty wyvern. That spell was intense.”

“She is upgraded.” He stared at me as if I were crazy. “I’m different.”

He chuckled at my nonchalant shrug. “So, it seems. I look forward to farming in the south.”

Chrin helped him into the carriage. “He’ll get plenty of food and rest. There’s a side door that takes the tunnel to the estates. Enjoy your stay.”

“What stay?” I asked in confusion.

“Uh… We’re pretending to be you to make a clean escape. In a day or two, leave the estate and this carriage will be long gone and forgotten about.” Chrin pointed to the door, and I almost didn’t go. I certainly didn’t want to trade my life for Fenor’s. “These things happen all the time, but it is best if those in charge explained their reasoning and plans.”

“You owe me Fenor,” I said and left before he could reply.

I used the door on the side of the barn and arrived in a walled off walkway between the stable and the main estate.
